Getting Settled

Whoa! Things have been a whirlwind since I've been back home in the Delta. For my first week back, I was in my last bit of summer training. I spent Monday-Thursday of that week in the same room for the greater part of the day, with other lower elementary teachers, learning from lower elementary content specialists. It was great- it got me pumped up for the year ahead. It was also somewhat of an information overload. And it started to sink in for me how big a job teaching Kindergarten is. I've spent so much time focusing on how fun it's going to be. How much I'm going to fall in love with my babies. But, we have a lot to do! For a lot of my kids, this is the first school experience they've ever had. We have to learn how to go to school- how to walk in the hall, how to go to lunch, how to sit on the carpet, and the list could go on and on. And then there's the content. We're going to learn so much this year- our letters, our numbers, our shapes, how to read, how to count. I'm already so excited to see how much my kids grow this year. And how much I grow this year.

After Kickoff, I moved into a house with two awesome girls. I love them and was excited to finally be settling into my new home in Clarksdale. My dad brought my stuff and helped me get moved in. It was awesome for him to get to see my new Mississippi home. However, after having just gotten my stuff unpacked, my pictures and curtains hung, and most importantly my Keurig up and running, I had to move out and find somewhere else to live due to circumstances outside of my control. It was such a bummer! And quite stressful! So, within a week, I moved twice. I'm so thankful for the wonderful people of Clarksdale- a couple of strangers from a local church came and helped me move the furniture that wouldn't fit in my car (which was most of my stuff, seeing as how I drive a Beetle). Also thankful for my amazing parents who made the double move possible. My awesome dad will be here again this weekend with even more stuff- it's hard to believe that I could have more. I've managed to fit one giant trailer full of stuff into my two bedroom apartment. I may or may not be a hoarder- the jury is still out on that. Don't worry. I'll keep you posted.

My new apartment is great. The bad news is that, since I don't have roommates, I may get kind of lonely. Although I do have amazing friends that live two minutes away who make sure that I'm not a hermit. The good news is that when people come visit me, I have a place for them to stay. So, go ahead and let me know when you're coming. And the great news is that since I don't have roommates, when I'm home alone, no matter what time of day it is, I can have pajamas on-it's the simple things in life.

Now that I'm finally getting settled after settling and then unsettling, I get to focus more on my classroom. I get to start working in my classroom tomorrow. My wonderful mom will be here to help with that! I'm excited to get it set up and ready for the first day of school, August 18th. I'm excited to create a space where my kids can grow and learn and create this year. I will be sure to post pictures of my room along the way for you to see.

Thank you for all your continued prayers, support, and love!

Whole30 - Week 1

In order for me to make good decisions, the good options need to be right in front of my face and easy to grab. So meal planning works really well for me. I don't necessarily get all the plastic containers and pre-portion meals for the week. But I do plan a menu that includes each meal and snacks. Then from that, I can create a shopping list. This allows me to go about my week, knowing that the good-for-me things are readily available.  I'm sharing my meal plan, recipe, and shopping lists below.  WEEK 1 - MEAL PLAN Day 1 (Thurs 2/21) Breakfast - Whole 30 Breakfast Casserole Lunch - Veggie Salad with Tuna & hard boiled eggs Dinner - Zoodles and Meatballs Snacks - Almonds, orange, apple crisp Day 2 (Fri 2/22) Breakfast - Strawberry Coconut Breakfast Bake Lunch - Leftover zoodles and meatballs Dinner - One Pan chicken, sweet potatoes, and green beans Snacks - Almonds, orange, apple crisp Day 3 (Sat 2/23) Breakfast - Whole 30 Breakfast Casserole

Whole30 Update: This isn't fun anymore

Hey people! I hope your Monday isn't feeling so much like a Monday today! I started this post last night. I wish I would have finished and posted it then because I was feeling pretty good. Today, however I'm feeling pretty poopy. Mentally, I'm past the point of excitement and I'm on to the "this isn't really fun anymore" part. Physically, I go back and forth between feeling lousy and just weird. See more details below on the craziness that a sugar detox does to you. But, the good news is, I'm more than 1/10th of the way through my 30 Days (Today is Day 5). I've learned a few things to share with you guys: 1. Sugar is in everything! EVERY. THING. I couldn't find a breakfast sausage or bacon that didn't have sugar in it. And it was almost impossible to find a spaghetti sauce. Prego Simply is a good option, but my grocery store was out. I did find a Whole30 compliant sauce in the health food section. 2. Sugar detox does some weird stuff

Hi. My Name is Cayla.

And I'm addicted to food.  Having been overweight most of my life, there are so many things that I've looked at and blamed.  But the more I've reflected on it, and examined my habits and my relationship with food, I've realized it is not healthy at all. It's quite dysfunctional. I'll find myself in this vicious cycle: dieting (I've literally tried them all, starting in MIDDLE SCHOOL - we'll talk about that some more in a later post), not seeing results, being sad because of the lack of results, binging food to try and make the sadness subside, which doesn't work, so I try another diet. But this time, I quit.  Let me be clear - I'm not quitting food. That would find me quite dead. But, I'm quitting being controlled by it. And I'm kicking off this journey with Whole30. Whole30 is a 30-day diet that emphasizes whole foods and the elimination of sugar, alcohol, grains, legumes, soy, and dairy. This is going to be super tough (I really l
